“I feel like a mermaid trip may be on the horizons”

You know here at Sol we are all about making a difference in terms of the environment. So I thought it only appropriate to write a blog post for you guys based on ways in which you can make a difference whilst exploring our beautiful planet.

P.s Don’t forget to take your beautiful Sol Water Bottle with you. It’s important to stay hydrated with all the awesome saving the planet work!

Plastic Sucks

I’m sure many of you must know by now how detrimental plastic can be to our oceans and the sea life in it. Take a step back and think about how much you’re really doing to make a difference. It’s all very well being aware that plastic doesn’t disintegrate and that it is ruining our beautiful planet, but how many of us actually walk by plastic on the beaches or roads each day and do nothing about it.

Well, it’s time. With us travelling more than ever, it makes more sense than not to make a positive impact on our journeys.

After a bit of exploring I’ve come up with a list of what I think look like the most incredible world friendy retreats going. I’m not sure this was a good idea, as I literally want to go on every single one of these now! I better start saving.

Let’s Travel the World and Make a Difference

Kenya: Marine Conservation Seva Yoga Retreat

by Oceanic Society

This literally sounds insane. Yoga, Kenya and marine conservation all in one. What more could you want?

You will help locals sort waste plastic for recycling, and crush it ready for sale. This will go towards other projects such as building houses in Kenya to the textile industries in Asia to make activewear from recycled plastic.

You’ll enjoy a daily guided yoga practice mixed in with beach cleanups and taking part in community projects.

Wellness & Sustainability Retreat

by The Ethical Straw Co.

Educational environmental tours, 3 x beach cleanups, countryside hike cleanups, and orphanage supply drop-offs. If this isn’t an eye-opener of a retreat then I don’t know what is. The thing about doing good things is that the more you do it the more you are educated on the problems and the more you want to help.

Retreats like this open our eyes to issues many people are unaware of. They are definitely one way to help you be the best person you can.

Boom Festival Portugal

by The Boom Team

This festival is literally one of the most insane festivals I’ve been to. All the food is vegetarian and all the art and sculptures are made from recycled products. You spend your time crossing between the rainforest and the desert in Portugal.

So many festivals can be really harmful to the environment these days. Especially when it comes down to the waste that is produced. Boom Festival is highly conscious of the waste that is produced and they re-use as much as they can.

In 2008 Boom collected and reused 45,000 litres of waste vegetable oil for the generators. This avoided the emission of 117,000 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere. They have compost toilets, bio constructions, and a fantastic team of permaculture gardeners. Work is provided to over 200 locals which is incredibly important as there is a huge unemployment rate in the area. They have started a food recycle process for the locals and also donated over €11,000 to local institutions and schooling.

If you’re going to go to festivals, make the right decisions and do your research on how much it could affect the environment.

FIJI Mermaid Sailing Retreat

by I Quit Plastics

@plasticfreemermaid is somebody I have been following for a while now, and I absolutely adore her life philosophies. Just a young girl going #toplessforthesea. You can imagine my excitement when I found out she was doing plastic free retreats. Where not only is everything plastic free but they also teach you ways in which to minimise your plastic consumption.

The retreat includes De-plastic your bathroom and kitchen workshops, teaching us how to make all the locations and potions any mermaid could ever need. You’ll learn about local Fijian Eco Systems & Marine Debris issues from Green Peace Pacific. You’ll also visit the local villages to see how the over-consumption of plastic is affecting them.

This retreat literally sounds like my dream. You not only do all the conservation work and get educated, but you learn to sail whilst going to Fiji and you also have daily yoga and meditation sessions.

I feel like a mermaid trip may be on the horizons for me.
