.. and how is silicon and glass better than plastic?
Glass is made by melting together several minerals at very high temperatures & is made from naturally abundant materials – namely sand – which is far less permeable than plastics, meaning glass won’t absorb residual tastes, odours or germs, and won’t leak chemicals (known to be endocrine disruptors in the body) into your beverage.
Glass, one of the easiest products to recycle, has become a main staple of the recycling industry. It is one man-made product that can be re-made time and again, without losing any of its properties and without polluting the environment. In fact, the same glass can be recycled a million times over to produce bottles and jars of the same high quality every time.
Silica – second only to oxygen, is the most abundant element in Earth’s crust. It is found in rocks, sand, clays and soils, combined with either oxygen as silicon dioxide, or with oxygen and other elements as silicates. Silicon is also recyclable.
Why is it then important to use a SoL reusable cup?
Disposable cups have a plastic lining that, when they go away, either end up in landfill — they don’t biodegrade — or they end up in the environment where they become a major pollution hazard. Even though the paper may degrade and become inert, the plastic will stick around for a really long time. Almost all compostable and biodegradable cups have to be processed in a commercial composting facility, not in household compost. And what’s worse, they require a dedicated collection because waste sorting is unable to differentiate compostable cups from other disposable cups, meaning they all go to landfill.
Disposable Coffee cups are estimated to be the second-largest contributor to litter waste after plastic bottles and it is estimated Australians use 1 billion disposable coffee cups each year. Using disposable cups every day for a year will consume nearly a kilo of plastic.
